What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide, also known as the weight loss peptide, is an approved treatment for obesity and type 2 diabetes that has shown remarkable effectiveness in clinical trials. It is not a new drug and actually has been on the market for many years. It is administered via an injection, typically in the thigh, upper arms, or belly, and is taken once a week.

Patients using semaglutide have reported weight losses of up to 80 pounds, with clinical trials indicating an average weight reduction of 12.4% over 68 weeks.

To minimize gastrointestinal side effects, patients must start with a lower dose of Semaglutide and gradually increase the dosage over a period of 16-20 weeks.

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in both Wegovy and Ozempic. It is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist, which means it mimics the action of the GLP-1 hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels and appetite. Semaglutide- Generic name of the active drug that is FDA approved Ozempic- Brand name of semaglutide that is FDA approved for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Wegovy- Brand name of semaglutide that is FDA approved for the treatment of obesity
  • How does taking Semaglutide work for weight loss?
Semaglutide promotes weight loss by acting on GLP-1 receptors in the brain to reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness after meals. It also slows gastric emptying, which makes patients feel fuller longer after meals, stabilizes blood sugar levels, and may directly affect metabolism and fat breakdown. These effects help patients consume fewer calories, manage cravings, and adopt healthier eating behaviors, contributing to significant weight loss over time.
  • Who cannot take Semaglutide?
While Semaglutide is a safe therapy approved by the FDA for weight loss, it is not safe if you have any of the following: diabetic retinopathy (eye damage resulting from diabetes) impaired kidney function thyroid cancer family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma kidney disease (with likely reduction in kidney function) pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) low blood sugar multiple endocrine neoplasia (type 2)

Semaglutide is taken via subcutaneous injection once weekly using a needle and syringe. It can be administered into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Don’t worry, we will provide proper training with your first injection and the needle to so tiny, you can barely feel it!
  • How often is the medication administered?
You only need to take it once a week.
  • Does Semaglutide need to be refrigerated?
Yes, the pharmacy provides strict storage instructions
  • How long will I need to take the medication?
There are no fixed guidelines for determining the duration of treatment with this medication. In clinical trials, patients used the medication for 52 to 68 weeks. Our suggestion is to continue taking the medication until you achieve your desired weight goal.

(make ‘here’ a hyperlink) (https://www.nejm.org/doi/10.1056/NEJMoa2032183) Here’s a brief summary The trial lasted approximately 16 months.
